Aomori-city and Tousei Area

Hakkoda Ropeway

Hakkoda ropeway is located the north part of Hachimantai National Park in Towada. It takes about 40 minutes from Aomori City by car. The feature of Mt. Hakkoda is a high moor. Many dragonflies are seen in summer season and you may see a moor with flowers, broad plateau and many lakes. The foliage season arrives at the end of September, and many tourists enjoy the beautiful scenery until the end of October. In mid-October, it snows on the mountain and people may enjoy skiing from the beginning of December until the beginning of May. Mt. Hakkoda is also famous spot for soft rimes from January to Feburary.

Sannnai-Maruyama Site

Sannai-Maruyama Site is the biggest settlement remains of Jomon period in Japan. This settlement was existed about 5500 to 4000 years ago. You may see this site all year for free. The volunteer staffs explain about the history when you walk around the remains. The excavation research was started in 1992 and the researchers found the remains of vertical caves housing, the graves of people in the settlement and pillar-supported structures. Those remains help to understand the situation of the settlement and the environment. Also Jomon pottery, stone implements, clay dolls, jade and other objects were found. Remains of plants such as gourds, burdock, beans and traces of chestnuts cultivation provide the new culture of Jomon period. Sannai-Maruyama Site was designated a special historic spot in Japan on November 2000.

Aomori Museum of Art

Aomori Museum of Art is located next to Sannai Maruyama Site and makes a contribution for Culture and Art activities in Aomori. This museum expands not only the exhibition of paintings or sculptures but also movies, plays and music. You may find Shiko Munakata’s work (famous printmaker of Aomori) and the creations of Contemporary art designer, Yoshitomo Nara as a permanent exhibition. This museum also tries to share the museum projects with people in Aomori.

Munakata Shiko Memorial Museum of Art

This memorial museum is the place to exhibit wood-block prints of Shiko Munakata. This museum is opened as the commemoration of the Order of Culture and for telling Shiko’s achievement in the future. You may see many exhibitions such as “Ten principal disciples of Shakamuni Buddha”. The museum is small because of the will of Shiko but they change the exhibitions four times a year and show many Shiko’s works.

Shiko Munakata is…
He is a famous printmaker in Aomori Prefecture. He left not only wood- block prints but also painting, calligraphies and poetries. He had been calling prints “Itaga” instead of “Hanga” since 1942 and he made many prints with full use of the characteristic of wood-block. He was the first person, who won the Order of Culture in Aomori in November, 1970.

Aomori Prefecture Tourist Center “ASPAM”

ASPAM was opened as a spot to introduce local products and the entertainment of Aomori Prefecture in 1986. The shape of ASPAM is the triangular appearance modeled "A" which is an initial of Aomori and it becomes the landmark of Aomori City.
You may find the souvenir shops, the observatory, the restaurants and the events of Tsugaru Shamisen at ASUPAM.

Aomori Nebuta Festival

Nebuta Festival is held from August 2nd to 7th for 6 days. A total of 3 million tourists come to see Nebuta Festival every year. Nebuta is a lantern shaped as humans. People are used to use bamboo frame and draw the pictures on Japanese paper long time ago. In 1950s, people started to make stereoscopic Nebuta with wire frame. Nebuta lantern with the carriage is about 5m×9m×7m(height×width×depth). About 20 Nebutas are made based on historical persons or the themes every summer and parade in Aomori City. The festival holds at night (7pm to 9pm) from August 2nd to 6th and in the afternoon (1pm to 3pm) on 7th.Many electrical bulbs are placed inside nebuta lanterns, and you may see the nebuta lantern with lights rising colorfully in the night town. There is also fireworks festival at the night on 7th. People who pull Nebuta called” Hikite” and a person who controls Hikite is “Sensu Mochi”. “Hayasi Kata” is people who play instruments such as Japanese flute, drums and bells. They warm up the festival and also lift the audience. “Haneto” is people who participate in Nebuta Festival. They have to wear the Yukata costume and Hanagasa (decorated bamboo hat). Haneto louds “Rasse-ra, Rasse-ra” when they jump.

Nebuta no Sato

Nebuta no Sato is the place that you may see samurai-shaped lantern called “Nebuta” and play with athletic facilities. Inside Nebuta house, you may see eight samurai-shaped NEBUTA (from Aomori city) and a fan-shaped NEPUTA (from Hirosaki city). There are some shows of Nebuta Festival a couple times a day. You may experience how to move Nebuta and how to dance as a dancer called”Haneto”.

Sukayu hot springs

Sukayu is the hot-spring hotel which has been known for 300 years. “Hiba Senninburo” (the hot spring made of Japanese cypress for 1,000 people) is famous mixed bathing. The spring quality is strong acidity and white sulfur bath. If you come close to Sukayu Hot Spring, you could smell strong sulfur. They have 5 different baths in at Sukayu Hot Spring.
Only females could take a bath from 8:00am to 9:00am and 8:00pm to 9:00pm. If you enjoy a leisurely soak, you may take a bath from 7:00am to 5:00pm.

Jogakura Bridge

Jogakura Bridge is spanned over Jogakura valley and this bridge opened on October 27th, 1995. The length of the bridge is 360 meters and the height from the valley is about 122 meters. This is the longest bridge in Japan as arch-type Bridge. You may watch the superb view of Mt. Hakkoda from the bridge for all seasons.

Asamushi Aquarium

Asamushi Aquarium is the only one in Aomori City. The sections are divided as cold sea to warm sea and you may see sharks and rays under the tunnel tank. In the area of Marine Animals, you may find sea otters, sea lions, seals and dolphins. At the dolphin’s pool, you may see the dolphin show and feeding time for dolphins and penguins.

Shopping Center in Hamada Area

There is a multiplex shopping center in Hamada in Aomori City. The shopping center called “Ito Yokado”has variety of items such as groceries, cosmetics, clothing, books and CDs. There is another shopping mall across the street called” Ali” which has variety stores of clothing, sundry articles, accessories and 100 yen products. They also have restaurants, cafes, beauty shop, game center and bowling alleys. If you walk about 400 meters (1300 feet), there is electronics retail store and you could buy cameras, games, and electronic dictionaries.

Nebuta House (Nebuta-no-ie warasse)

This facility is just opened on January 5th, 2011. This place shows Nebuta (huge human-shaped lantern) exhibitions and history of Nebuta Festival which is designated as one of the biggest festival in Japan. You may experience Nebuta festival with being the participants called “Haneto” or the music called “Ohayashi”. Moreover there are some activities for painting or handcrafts. You may enjoy Nebuta Festival through the year with a lot of experiences in Wa Rasse. It only takes a minute from JR Aomori Station.

A-Factory

A-FACTORY is opened near JR Aomori Station at the same time as the opening for Shin Aomori Station. A-Factory has variety of food stores and restaurants. On the first floor, you could see the factory of making apple sparkling wine called “Aomori Cidre” using famous Aomori apples through the glass. You may purchase Apple Cidre here and there are also non-alcohol sparkling apple wines so you may enjoy with your family to drink or you may taste the wine even you have to drive. There are also some restaurants you could taste Sushi, Barayaki (BBQ with onion and garlic), soup and sweets.

Aomori Shunmikan

Aomori Shunmikan has souvenir shops and restaurants in Shin Aomori Station. It was opened on December 4th, 2010 with the opening for Shin Aomori Station. You may taste famous tuna from Ooma Town called “Ooma Tuna”, ramen noodle with freshwater clams and Tsuyu Yakisoba (Soup with Yakisoba) which is famous for the local dish in Japan. Also you may purchase variety of products using fresh vegetables or fruits. You could enjoy Aomori right after you arrive at Shin Aomori Station.
